How to Ask ChatGPT to Analyze Your Texts (Prompt)
To get ChatGPT to analyze your texts, give it the chat (a WhatsApp export or screenshots) with a prompt that asks for an honest read of the dynamic, not a summary. The prompt below works. A chatbot is good at reading tone, naming red flags and suggesting what to say. What it won't do in plain chat is count: when we gave a three-month WhatsApp export to two current OpenAI models and asked for message counts and reply times, both declined and wrote a Python script for us to run instead.
If you've seen people on TikTok pasting their chats into ChatGPT and asking for the red flags, this is how to do it properly, and where the answer stops being reliable.
The prompt (copy and paste)
Below is an exported chat between me ([your name]) and [their name]. Read it honestly and tell me:
1. How interested each of us seems, and what in the chat shows it.
2. Any red flags, with examples from the chat, and how serious each one is.
3. The pattern we fall into, and what I should do next.
Don't just tell me what I want to hear.
Two things make the difference. Say which name is you, so it doesn't mix up the two sides. And ask for examples from the chat, so every claim points at real messages you can check.
How to give it the chat
- WhatsApp: open the chat, tap the name, tap Export Chat and choose Without Media. Upload the file in ChatGPT, or paste the text if the chat is short. The full steps are in our WhatsApp export guide.
- Instagram, iMessage, dating apps: there's no export button for a single chat, so upload screenshots of the conversation, in order.
- Names: if you'd rather not share them, replace both names with "Me" and "Them" before you paste.
Whatever you paste into a chatbot stays in your chat history until you delete it. If that matters to you, check ChatGPT's data controls, or use a temporary chat.
What a general chatbot does well
Reading tone. Explaining what an ambiguous message might mean. Naming a pattern like breadcrumbing or hot and cold. Drafting a reply that doesn't sound desperate. For one exchange of a few dozen messages, it's genuinely useful, and the written part of its read can be sharp.
Where it falls short
It doesn't count, and good models say so
We made up a WhatsApp chat between "Sam" and "Alex": three months, 1,458 messages, with numbers we knew in advance. Sam sent 730 messages and Alex 728. Sam started 68% of their 94 conversations (a new conversation after six hours of silence). Sam replied in 4 minutes on average, Alex in 48.
We gave the export to two current OpenAI models in November 2026 with the prompt above plus a request for those three numbers. Both refused to guess: they said they couldn't reliably count that many lines, and each wrote a Python script for us to run on the file instead. That's the honest answer, and better than invented numbers. But it means that in plain chat, you don't get the counts. In ChatGPT itself, a file upload may let it run such a script for you, and then the result is only as good as the script's handling of your export's date format.
The written read, on the other hand, was reasonable: one of the models noticed that Alex answered plans with "let's see" and "not sure yet", which is exactly the kind of thing worth noticing.
Long chats
A year of daily texting can run to tens of thousands of messages. Very long exports may not fit in one conversation at all, and then the read only covers what fit.
Who is who
In an export both people are just names. Tell it which one is you, every time, or the read can quietly flip the two sides.
ChatGPT vs a dedicated chat analyzer
| ChatGPT | Cringe Chat Analyzer | |
|---|---|---|
| Reads tone, red flags, what to do next | Yes, with a good prompt | Yes |
| Message counts, who starts, reply times | Not in plain chat; needs code run on the file | Counted from every timestamp |
| Long chats | If they fit in one message | Every message counted |
| Group chats | Can read them | Counted leaderboard and awards per person, plus a read |
| Your chat afterwards | In your ChatGPT history until you delete it | Uploaded copy deleted right after the read |
| Cost | Free tier available | $1.99 a chat, or a subscription |
For a quick second opinion on a few messages, use the chatbot. For a real chat history where the numbers matter (who's carrying it, who's slowing down), use something that counts. What the analyzer shows is on the WhatsApp chat analyzer page; other apps are compared in the best AI chat analyzer apps.
FAQ
Can ChatGPT analyze my text messages?
Yes, it can read a pasted chat or screenshots and tell you about tone, interest and red flags. It won't count messages or reply times in plain chat; asked to, current models offer a script instead.
What's the best prompt to ask ChatGPT if someone likes me?
Give it the whole chat, say which name is you, and ask how interested each of you seems and what in the chat shows it, with examples. Ask it not to tell you what you want to hear.
Is it safe to paste private chats into ChatGPT?
The chat stays in your ChatGPT history until you delete it, and the other person never agreed to share it. Remove names if you can, check the data controls, and consider a temporary chat.
Why doesn't ChatGPT give me exact numbers on a long chat?
Counting thousands of lines by reading them isn't reliable for a language model, and good models say so. The numbers need code run on the file, or an app that parses every timestamp.
