Short answer

There's no right number of minutes. In a 2026 study of 3.4 million messages from 889 two-person WhatsApp and Instagram chats, about 70% of WhatsApp messages and 44% of Instagram messages got a reply within five minutes, and the two people in a chat tended to reply at a similar speed. So the useful questions are whether your reply times are roughly balanced, and whether theirs is changing.

"They took four hours to reply" feels like information. Sometimes it is. Most of the time it's a meeting, a gym session or a phone left in another room. The number on its own says little; the pattern over weeks says a lot.

What research says about reply times

A study posted in May 2026 by researchers Florian Martin, Olya Hakobyan and Hanna Drimalla looked at 3.4 million messages from 889 one-to-one chats that 97 people donated from WhatsApp and Instagram ("Sorry for the late reply", a preprint not yet peer reviewed). Three findings matter here:

In other words, a big, lasting gap between two people's reply times is unusual, and that's what's worth noticing.

Consistent beats fast

Someone who always replies within an hour is easier to read than someone who replies in seconds one day and in two days the next. Steady, even slow, usually means a person's habits. Swings usually mean something else is going on: other priorities, mixed feelings, or a phone that only comes out when they're bored.

When slow replies mean nothing

When a slowdown is a signal

The change matters more than the number. Watch for:

How to see the average reply time for both of you

Scrolling back and guessing doesn't work; memory keeps the slow replies and forgets the fast ones. For a WhatsApp chat, export it (Without Media) and share it to Red Flag: Cringe Chat Analyzer on iPhone. It counts the average reply time for each of you from every timestamp, along with who starts the conversations and who texts more, then writes a read of what the numbers mean. The WhatsApp chat analyzer page shows everything it counts.

FAQ

How long is too long to text back?

There's no fixed limit. Compare it to their usual speed and to yours. A reply that's much slower than their normal, for weeks, says more than any single long gap.

Does replying fast mean they like you?

Not by itself. Fast replies with no questions back and no plans are just fast. Speed counts when it comes with effort: questions, longer messages, suggestions to meet.

Why does he take hours to reply but is always online?

Being online isn't the same as being free to talk; people answer work chats, family groups and memes in between. But if they're active all day and consistently slow only with you, it's a sign of where you are on their list.

Should I match their reply time?

Don't play games with timers. Reply when it suits you. If you notice you're always waiting and they never are, that imbalance is the thing to address, not the minutes.

Stop guessing. Run the chat.
